I’m Kyle and I’m a web developer. I taught myself everything I know because it was a curiosity in high school when I started that bloomed into a passion during college. And since there was no program for it at Marquette University until my senior year, I had no choice but to continue teaching myself and remaining on top of current trends and technologies. It wasn’t worth switching majors and staying for another 2-3 years to have a piece of paper tell me I could develop websites when I was doing it every day.
So, instead, I majored in my second passion: writing. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English – Writing Intensive from Marquette, class of 2006.
My biggest strength is how quickly I’m able to pick up new languages and technologies after a brief introduction and then diving in headfirst. It’s how I learned Rails, XML/XSLT, SharePoint, .NET, Adobe Flex and every other language/technology I know.
Skills
- Ruby on Rails 2.x and 3.x
- XHTML/CSS
- XML/XSLT
- JavaScript (focus on jQuery)
- Adobe Flex 3 w/ ActionScript 3.0
- Adobe Photoshop
- ASP.NET with C# and VB (prefer C#)
- PHP
- MySQL w/minor database administration through phpMyAdmin
I’ve also done some extensive work with SharePoint 2003 and 2007 but, like most Microsoft technologies, I found it bloated and hard to work with if anything outside of the stock, out-of-box experience was attempted. I’d prefer to never revisit those platforms again if at all possible. Plus, I find the open source community far more helpful, agile and exciting all-around.
And I wouldn’t call myself a designer by any stretch of the word, but I can mimic anything I see in Photoshop quite easily. I just have a hard time coming up with stunning designs in any acceptable time frame. I can copy a great design rather quickly, however. :)
